I completely disagree with this statement. The fact that you actually 'suck at something' the first or second time you do it, you should not be considered someone that is going to excel to the top of the field. In fact the old saying "if at first you don't succeed, try, try (try) again" should only apply if you truly have to get the job done. If you are going in to a field of expertise where you truly don't make a splash initially, whereas you are actually going to enjoy what it is you are doing, you should probably move on to something else. These up-and-comers (low to mid 20 somethings) that have very little or no 'street skills' when it comes to previous employment should not be preaching to the choir no matter how successful they may have become. In almost all incidents of silicon valley people it is who you know as well as timing--being in the right place at the right time (from who you know)
