No Agenda-Saturday News Letter

Dear Producer,
As we head to the Fourth of July weekend next week we expect to see another holiday drop off in both support and listenership. You should note that we work though these holidays unlike most media operations that give up and take the week off. Show your appreciation by contributing a lucky Fourth of July contribution of 74.14. If you do this we will get through what promises to be a lively week of news and analysis. Click here!

Tomorrow expect us to focus on the rigged World Cup with final predictions. Adam has also dug up some very exclusive insight into the IRS email scandal. This promises to be breaking news not found elsewhere.

Mr. Cool in action. No Agenda sys-ops chime in!

Also we cover the presidential candidacy of Joe O’Biden, who is bragging now about being dead broke in an attempt to top Hillary’s nonsensical claim that she and Bill were destitute when they left the White House. Although, that would explain the (long forgotten) fact that the twosome were trying to steal White House furniture.

Hey, can you spare a dime?

And, of course, we are one of the few (only??) USA-based news-analysis podcasts that closely tracks the never-ending shenanigans of the EU.

Goofy EU News? Whaaaaa?

I’ll have a few weird clips for you too, as usual. So make sure you listen to the last show for June 2014. And support the show through July with any form of contribution you can afford by clicking on the support page here.

Thanks,
Your co-host,

John C. Dvorak

New anti-spam rules sow confusion for business and charities (including my rant)

This new "law" that is going to be put in place is so full of questionable issues that it will become a lawyers winfall. To start with, giving the CRTC the right to police this means nothing more than a wing of the current government in power has final say. The one issue it deals with is spam and unsolicited mail and text including twitter TO YOUR PHONE.. now here is where the technical part comes in to play: Unless you enable email on your phone then any email that goes to your desktop or laptop is ok? It refers to text messages, again unsolicited yet regardless of any unwanted incoming text you are still going to be charged by your phone provider so you are also going to be dealing with them on this. I don't know about you but I have asked for text services to be blocked back in the day when I had Rogers as my phone provider only some still came through and yes, I was charged each month.. it got to the point that I found it cost me more in my own personal time to contact them and get the unsolicited texts (that were supposed to be blocked) that I just gave up.
So you tell me how this is going to be any different?  As it has been from the dawn of internet email, you could send a spam message to your internet provider's email service and it was supposed to be blocked. Sometimes it would work and other times it wouldn't.
Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of removing unwanted 'junk' and 'spam' from the internet but at what costs, 1 Million dollars? You can bet the first actual case that goes to court will have more publicity than you can ever imagine.. 10 Million for a company... I don't know..someone will do the math on this and probably figure it may be worth it to actually get sued!

This should be nothing more than 100 tv channels and one that you don't like--go ahead and change the channel but don't be thinking about litigation because it is something you don't  like.  You get a message you don't want, click on the spam/junk email button and it is gone!

Flying--and crashing--a $1300 quadcopter drone Blasting through the sky with ...

It is because of idiots like this that give the DJI Phantom "drone" (I hate that name) a bad rap... first of all, if you read the instructions and notice that FAA does not permit you to fly over 400 feet, you shouldn't be making a video that displays over 1000 feet in the on screen graphic, nor mention how you took it up to 500 feet in a mear seconds. What an ass!

Only the 5.5-Inch iPhone 6 May Offer 128GB Models

This is pretty typical, if this is in fact what happens when the iphone 6 does hit the shelves. The simple fact that there is no external memory slot on iphones means they have the ability to simply charge more for internal memory. Just one more reason I am so glad I ditched my iphone 3 and went to the Samsung Galaxy Note class phone. Even the first model was smoking fast but now with the NOTE 2, no comparing.. I opted not to go to version 3 because I am so happy with version 2...as for iphone 6.. sorry, I'm pretty sure there is not going to be enough 'bleeding edge' tech to see me make the move back!

Dear Producers,
It’s that time of year when we do our Fourth of July celebration fund raising with both a 7-4-14 ($74.14) USA donation or the European date stamp of 4-7-14 ($47.14). The EU amount is cheaper because they do not even celebrate the holiday.

Typical American backyard gathering

Whatever the case we will keep this donation amount special until the 4th which comes right after next Thursday’s show. Please help.

Tomorrow meanwhile, new developments in the Middle East are keeping the news media busy. Chelsea Manning is now writing op-eds for the New York Times? Ourexclusive insight into the recent airliner mishap as well as enlightening clips and analysis of news you cannot find anywhere else.

This is all thanks to you. Visit the support page here or the regular donation pageto show your support for the Best Podcast in the Universe.

The First US High Speed Rail Line could be $10 billion privately funded line from Dallas to Houston

It's a 45 min flight and don't miss yourself about the 'no security line' when taking the train. This week be just the same if/when this was ever built!
Texas Central plans to fund construction of high speed rail from Dallas to Houston — with early estimates put at about $10 billion — exclusively through private investment. It would consider federal financing, says Lawless, but it will not accept subsidies even if the line fails to turn a profit.
Texas Central Railway, a private company that plans to link Dallas and Houston with a 200-mile-per-hour bullet train as soon as 2021. The venture just might be high-speed rail's best hope in the United States.
"The project has been progressing below the radar, very quietly, very deliberately, over the last four years plus," says Lawless. It's now undergoing an environmental impact study that will take between two and three years, but Texas Central, whose backers include Japan's JR Central railway, has already conducted its own extensive research. The company, originally called U.S.-Japan High-Speed Rail, looked at 97 possible routes nationwide before concluding that Texas was the ideal place for a high-speed line — and that healthy profits could be made in long-distance passenger rail, a travel mode that for the past 40 years has existed only with the help of massive government subsidies.
"Texas is special," says Lawless. He lists among its advantages a flat, rural landscape, staggering growth potential, and a "business-friendly approach." He adds that "as city pairs, Dallas and Houston are pretty unique in the United States." The cities are 240 miles apart, a distance Lawless describes as a "sweet spot" for high-speed rail, where it beats both air and highway travel.
The company is working under the assumption that both metro area populations will double by 2035, but their economies are already linked to an extent that that the railway's backers can count on a steady flow of traffic between them. Crucial to the line's success will be the 50,000 people who commute regularly between Dallas and Houston, currently a five-hour schlep in traffic or an hour-long flight on Southwest Airlines — which, when factoring in security lines and travel to and from the airport, takes longer than the 90-minute ride, downtown to downtown.

iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 to come with more durable Touch ID sensor

In my opinion, since the passing of Steve Jobs, Apple has completely lost their focus. With the latest rumours of a more durable touch id sensor on the next batch of ipads, it seems to me they are steering their ship in the wrong direction. This is just another gimmick they hope will sell more units but the days of them leading the way with new Bleeding Edge Tech is obviously a thing of the past!

No Agenda-The Saturday Missive

Dear Producers,

Your No Agenda Show is headed to its seventh anniversary and, more than ever, it needs continued support, especially during a sluggish summer season. While others are on hiatus during the summer, your No Agenda Show continues unabated. This is so you, the actual producers and supporters, can be the most up-to-date with important current affairs that will affect your life.

Hopefully, you will continue to support the show with a generous contribution. The show would like to offer a special feel the heat open donation. What is the temperature outside as you are reading this email? 70? 80? 69? Donate that amount for a special feel the heat call out on Sunday’s show.

Otherwise, visit the support page here and find a support plan that suits you.

We also like to remind you that most every bank has special time-payment plansthat allows the bank to take out a certain amount from your bank account and mails us a check monthly or weekly or at whatever frequency you desire for however long you desire. This is usually provided as a service to all customers.

The mailing address the bank can use is No Agenda Show, Box 339, El Cerrito, CA 94530. This is also an address you can use for special direct contributions of support or anything else you want to send. I received a mug this week. Woo hoo.

The summer is here, so please keep your support steady. And do not miss a show.

On a lighter note I got a funny photo from Sire Gene showing Adam photo bombing Gene and Adam’s visiting niece. I had to share this. All photos can be improved with photo bombers. Luckily Photoshop can remove the offenders.

Your co-host,

John C. Dvorak
PS. Yes people complained about the lack of a cute kitten in the last newsletter. So I found it interesting that singer Taylor Swift apparently has a slew of cats and is destined to become a cat lady. Her new little kitten has become the center of attention. To a cat this is hitting the jackpot.

Soon, the empire will be mine!

Microsoft Terms of Service are changing-email is not spam but it should be!

I am getting inundated by clients asking what they are supposed to do and if this is a legitimate email or not. To answer quite simply:

Yes, it is legitimate and no, there is nothing you need to do. In fact you should NOT be clicking through the message at all. Why not? Because with most email that is sent out to people it is tracked by whether or not it is opened and more importantly, if it is read and if you click on a link within the email message then obviously it is considered to be read.  If you don't care about receiving email like this in the future then you need to do nothing more however if you wish to stop receiving email  like this then scroll down to the bottom of the message and in most cases you will find a 'unsubscribe' link. clicking on this link should take you to a page that says you are now unsubscribed and/or provides your current email address and wants you to click to accept the fact that you are unsubscribing. This is ok as well. However, BE AWARE of the ones where you click on the UNSUBSCRIBE link to end up on a page that prompts you to first enter your email address.. YOU DO NOT WANT TO INSERT YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS because if you do, you are actually providing that company with a legitimate email address that is sure to be spammed in the future, if not sold off as a legitimate email address to a 3rd party spamming company.  In the case of this email from Microsoft, you will first have to click on the PRIVACY STATEMENT link at the bottom of the email you received which takes you to another long winded page about their transparency and privacy, blah, blah, blah. Here you will need to scroll down to the section about your MICROSOFT ACCOUNT and click on the OPT OUT link where you will then have the option to opt out of various advertisers.. trust me when I say you will always have to accept some of these because just like Google, Yahoo and Facebook, Microsoft is intertwined with so many companies that you are going to have to take part in some in order to utilize their services.

If you wonder why you are receiving this email from Microsoft in the first place, it would be because you have a Windows 8 machine and if you remember initially signing in to your computer where it prompted you for your microsoft account sign in and if you didn't have one, to create one OR if you were wise enough to bypass this by signing in to your LOCAL MACHINE where you can bypass signing in to Microsoft, then you are still receiving it because in order to use the Microsoft Store, you would have had to sign in to your Microsoft account. So regardless of how you try to bypass Microsoft, they will always find a way..

If you utilize Google Gmail then you can always add this as SPAM and further mailings will go directly to your spam.. since there is really no need to read this statement.

I am enclosing part of the email message which does include the link to their privacy statement which you can then decide whether or not you wish to opt out of future mailings.
